About Backwashing

Backwashing is the process of reversing the water flow to flush out debris and contaminants from pool filters. Backwashing should be continued for a few minutes, or until the water running through the waste line is clear. This helps reduce the need to manually clean your pool’s filters. A good indication that the system needs to be backwashed is when your pressure gauge rises 8-10 PSI above the startup (or clean) pressure.

How Often Should You Backwash?

This depends on how much use your pool gets and how much debris and contaminants are in the system. Also, the size and type of filters also play a role in how frequently you need to backwash. For example, DE filters might need to be cleaned every 1-2 months. For pools that are used more frequently and acquire more debris, backwashing is a good routine to work into your maintenance schedule.

Other outside factors may require you to perform additional backwashing. For example, if there is an algae breakout or a major storm, this could result in additional contaminants in the filtration system.

If you use a sand filter system with your pool, you might consider backwashing once per month.

Benefits of Backwashing

After backwashing, you’ll use less energy by running your pump at a lower speed. This will also reduce the amount of time you’ll need to spend taking apart and cleaning your filters. This helps maintain a longer lasting filter and keeps your pool functioning properly.
