Salt Water vs. Chlorine Above-Ground Pools

Salt-Water VS. Chlorine
Above Ground Pools

Two different systems. One amazing pool. We break down the real-world facts on upkeep, upfront costs, and long-term comfort so you can choose the perfect setup for your backyard.

Which Pool System Best Fits Your Lifestyle?

How to choose between an automated salt water system and a traditional manual chlorine setup is the most common question we answer every day.

Both systems will keep your pool water crystal clear, sanitized, and safe to swim in. The real difference comes down to your daily maintenance routine, your upfront equipment budget, and, most importantly, which pool model you need to buy to support it.

Let’s clear up one major misconception right away: salt water pools ARE chlorine pools. A salt water system simply uses an inline generator cell to convert plain pool salt into pure chlorine inside your plumbing. The water is still sanitized by chlorine; you just never have to manually buy, measure, or pour harsh chemical buckets into your pool by hand.

Compare Pools Systems

Feature Automated salt water system Traditional manual chlorine
How sanitizer enters Generated automatically by a salt cell Added manually by the pool owner
Water texture & feel Noticeably soft, silky, and premium Standard, clean pool water
Chemical odor Minimal to none More traditional, noticeable pool smell
Skin & eye irritation Extremely low / gentle Moderate
Upfront setup cost Higher initial investment (requires equipment) Lower initial investment
Ongoing chemical bills Incredibly low — salt is cheap Higher — continuous buying required
Daily upkeep routine Hands-off and automated Requires more frequent manual work
Pool structure demands Requires certified salt-rated pool Works with any above-ground pool

The Case for Salt Water

SUnmatched Swim Comfort: Hands down, the biggest reason families choose salt is the way the water feels. Salt water systems dramatically reduce chloramines, the harsh chemical byproducts responsible for red eyes, dry skin, and that pungent 'pool smell'. The water feels smooth, silky, and gentle on sensitive skin.

Hands-Off Daily Upkeep: Because your generator produces a steady stream of sanitizer automatically, your daily chores vanish. No more measuring out liquids or handling chalky tablets every afternoon. You still check basic pH and alkalinity, but your chemical routine becomes infinitely simpler.

Tiny Seasonal Chemical Bills: Pure pool-grade salt is shockingly inexpensive and doesn't just evaporate out of the water. Once you build your initial salt base, your ongoing chemical expenses drop to a fraction of what traditional chlorine owners spend in a season.

The Reality Check: Keep in mind that salt water requires a higher starting investment. A quality generator setup adds anywhere from $500 to $1,500 up front. Furthermore, because salt can accelerate corrosion on standard metal frames, you must pair it with pool hardware engineered to handle it. In our lineup, our premium Platinum-tier resin pools are the only ones approved for use with salt generators.

The Case for Traditional Chlorine

Super Low Startup Cost: Getting up and running with standard chlorine is incredibly simple and budget-friendly. All you need is your standard pump, filter, and a basic chemical floater. There’s no expensive electronic generator equipment to purchase or install up front.

Ultimate Flexibility in Pool Choices: Traditional chlorine is compatible with every single above-ground pool model we carry, whether you want an entry-tier steel pool, a mid-range hybrid, or a top-shelf resin model. There are zero compatibility constraints.

A Familiar, Predictable Experience: For first-time pool owners, manual chlorination is a well-mapped, classic routine. You use simple test strips, follow a straightforward weekly schedule, and don't have to learn how to clean or diagnose electronic generator cells.

The Reality Check: Manual chlorination requires regular, hands-on attention. You have to manually monitor and add sanitizer to prevent algae breakouts, and you will be buying and lugging heavy buckets of chlorine to your pool regularly throughout the hot summer months. Over a few seasons, those recurring chemical receipts can easily eat up your initial equipment savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a salt-water pool completely chlorine-free?

No, that is a myth! A salt water pool is absolutely a chlorine pool. The only difference is that your inline salt cell manufactures the chlorine automatically on-site from dissolved salt, instead of you dumping chemical buckets in by hand.

Which setup costs less over time?

Salt systems win on long-term operational costs because pool salt is incredibly cheap compared to ongoing chlorine purchases. However, traditional chlorine wins on the initial price tag since there is no electronic generator required.

Can I start with chlorine and switch over to salt later?

Only if you buy a salt-rated pool framework right from the start. In our current inventory, the only models structurally rated to handle future salt conversions are the Delta Dream and Marsh Majesty.
