Ultima S.O.S. and BioGuard Smart Shock

Premium Shock

If you don’t understand swimming pool water treatment and you hear, “I’m going to shock the pool” you may immediately think that there is something drastically wrong. The idea quickly enters your mind that there will be no relaxing swim today, the pool party tomorrow is cancelled, plans are ruined etc. However, this really couldn’t be any further from the truth.

“Shocking” is a process that introduces a large amount of chlorine (or non-chlorine chemicals if you are going that route) to a pool with the purpose of increasing the amount of free chlorine to a point where anything contaminating your pool water is completely destroyed. Typically, those things being targeted are bacteria, algae, and chloramines.

You’ll be happy to know that this doesn’t have to be a large production. We sell a couple of really great products that take care of this. You may be “shocked” to know, that these products can be applied and have you swimming again in as little as 15 minutes without any need to cancel your pool related plans.

S.O.S

Ultima S.O.S. (stands for Shock, Oxidize and Sanitize) and works in a 4 in 1 way (also boosts free chlorine) to eliminate organic wastes. It dissolves really quickly, boosts free chlorine levels, contains no calcium, does not throw off the balance of your water in any other ways as it is buffered, and you only need one pound to treat 10,000 gallons of pool water.

S.O.S. provides sparkling clean water with a unique formula that oxidizes anything brought into the pool by people that may cause haziness or dullness of the pool water. The product is in granular form and can be used effectively with ozone, salt water, bromine, and chlorine systems.

With S.O.S. you’ll want to add about 2/3 of the dose to the deeper end of the pool and make sure that no one is swimming and everyone is aware of chemicals in the pool. Wait 15 minutes and check the chlorine level which should come in between 1 and 4 ppm (parts per-million) It would not be advisable to re-enter the pool with a reading above this range.

It is suggested that you use S.O.S. weekly to get the most benefit. Each pound used will increase the free chlorine concentration by 1 ppm in 10,000 gallons of pool water. This formula may have to be increased during periods of heavier use or following weather events like lots of rain or extreme winds.

SMART SHOCK

Another easy to use product is Smart Shock by Bioguard. This also works to oxidize and eliminate organic contaminants in the pool. Those pesky things that cause sore eyes, cloudy water, and smells that aren’t great are quickly taken care of with Smart Shock. This premium product dissolves quickly, keeps your pool water clear, and is very easy to understand and use.

It also kills algae and bacteria and inhibits the growth of algae overall with a unique blend of blue crystals designed to handle any algae issues. It comes in a 1-pound bag, dissolves quickly and effectively, and is designed for use in all types of pools. The makeup of the product also includes a buffer paving the way to crystal clear water and no pH increase. Just like the S.O.S., you can be swimming in the pool 15 minutes after using Smart Shock.

Dosage amounts check in with the following: For routine shock maintenance use 1 pound of this product for every 12,000 gallons of pool water. If you are treating for resistant algae you should utilize 1 pound for every 2,400 gallons of water and for lighter algae go with the same 1 pound for every 12,000 gallons ratio.

CONCLUSION

Always add chemicals like these with both a pump and a filter running to make sure that you have good control over circulation and thorough mixing of the additive. These products are designed to be soluble so there really shouldn’t be any trouble with dissolving. It would be advisable to run your pool pump for 24 to 48 hours after treatment helping to ensure optimal mixing.
